Spring 2025 Airport Construction Update

I know many residents in Ward 3 have experienced changes in aircraft noise and flying patterns, primarily because of the West Runway Rehabilitation project. This has led to increase in use of the East and Crosswind Runways over west Calgary.

The 85 year old runway is nearing the end of its life and in desperate need of repair.

Starting in April 2025, construction on the West Runway will resume and yes, more aircraft will be using the East runway and Crosswind Runways.

What does this mean?

The increased use of the East and Crosswind Runways is temporary, but will continue during the 2025 construction season. There will be an increase in aircraft activity similar to Summer 2024. During winter months, all runways at YYC are fully operational, allowing for normal departures and arrivals.

The City does not manage the airspace around Calgary. NAV Canada is the organization that directs planes to specific runways to ensure safe and efficient operations. While the Calgary Airport Authority operates the airport and manages the airfield, it does not dictate which runways are used and cannot influence this decision.

If residents have concerns regarding the temporary increase in aircraft noise, these can be submitted to the airport’s noise concern web portal here or by calling their hotline at 403-735-1408.

Calgary Airport Authority held public information sessions before the West Runway Rehabilitation project began in 2024.

Additional public information sessions will be held at VIVO for Healthy Generations on February 19th and 20th from 6 – 8 pm.
