Missed the Green Line Town Hall? Summary Here.

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions and attended the town hall. Below is a copy of the presentation from the evening.

Background:

As of July 31st, 2024, all three levels of government had come together to commit to building Phase 1 of the Green Line. On September 3rd, the Premier and Transportation Minister suddenly pulled all funding for the project. 

As our city grows by a staggering 6%, we are facing an unprecendented demand for all core services like transit. As we reach a crossroads, I wanted to hear directly from residents.

On October 17th, I hosted an in person townhall on the Green Line and transit in Ward 3. This townhall was an opportunity to discuss the chronology of the project and gather feedback from my residents about what they would like prioritized moving forward. 

In 2017 the previous Council voted to pursue Phase 1 of the Green Line from Eau Claire to Shepard.

In 2017 , all three levels of government committed to funding. In 2020, procurement began.

In 2020, the Province, under, Jason Kenney, pursued a Provincial Review, effectively pausing the project.

The train would use a bored tunnel between the Blue and Orange dots and a cut and cover tunnel from Orange to Purple. At no point would we tunnel under the river.

This slide is used to explain why we can’t use the existing lines: capacity.

To accommodate ridership, the future plan is that the Blue and Red lines will eventually separate.

Conclusion: This alignment works well because it does not overload 7th Ave.

Building a train line is much more than just laying track and buying train cars.

In July 2024, Council voted for this alignment to move forward.

The Province agrees to keep 4th-Shepard portion.

The Nose Creek alignment was studied extensively.

Low floor trains require less costly infrastructure upgrades at stations. They allow for stations like the one pictured, rather than the escalator style stations on the next slide.
