Aboriginal Awareness Week

June 19-25 is Aboriginal Awareness Week and, as Deputy Mayor for the month of June, I was honoured to issue the Proclamation at the launch event.

The theme for this year is “Keeping the Circle Strong through Language and Culture”. The circle is a sacred symbol in First Nations culture. It represents the mutual dependence of all life; how we are all connected.

The circle represents healing and a connection to nature. The moon, the sun, the earth—all are circular. When we sit or gather in a circle, we can better connect. As we emerge from the last two years of pandemic, I encourage you all to reconnect with your families, your neighbours, and friends to preserve your own circle.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. Please visit the Aboriginal Awareness Week website for a list of events and learn more about our local First Nations culture.
